Why did I chose marketing?

By

Marketing has to be one of the only careers where you finish a degree and instantly your knowledge is overtaken by the industry. It is a career that changes almost daily and one where you are required to learn on the spot. I can’t count how many times social media platforms have ‘changed their algorithm’, meaning It is my job to spend three hours on google understanding how this new system works, before then evaluating how I cheat to get my content seen. The field of play changes so quickly and that doesn’t just equate to what is grabbing your audiences attention. Legislation, technology, generational language, celebrity status, you name it, that all can play a factor in you being top of the class, or outclassed. It is our role as marketeers to be innovators, to be guardians of brand identity and keep on top of new social mini booms, such as beans on Weetabix (I know, wrong on so many levels).

Now there is a lot more to marketing than just keeping with the trends and definitely more to it than just ‘being good at social media.’ I finished my marketing degree with a lot of knowledge (I thought) but until entering industry I really didn’t have a clue how to put this into practice. Next I did what every 20 year old with no clear career route, a certain enjoyment of the student life and a family full of teachers would do; you guessed it, I taught marketing. I never intended to be a teacher and after two years I realised this really wasn’t the career for me, but I did leave with an ability to present, an understanding of how to educate, the ability to converse with a range of people and most importantly a step into my preferred career, marketing.

Fast forward ten years and I decided to set up a company, something I wanted to do right from the first time I stepped foot in university. I combined my graphic design skills, PR, marketing knowledge, web design skills, networking and event planning skills, to create an all in one marketing company. The title of this blog post was why did I chose marketing and the answer is easy. I didn’t chose marketing, I fell in love with it. “just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in” *Al Pacino voice*.
